Are we prismatic or black and white?
I haven’t been overly impressed with ReadWriteWeb lately, but sometimes they put out an interesting article. This article by 4-Chan’s creator Chris Poole struck a cord with me. His basic premise is that almost all the current popular social sites are an all or nothing way to present yourself. People are multidimenisonal and most of the services don’t allow you to convey that. I...

Dying book stores and recommendations
Recently Borders, a book store chain in the US, announced it would be closing it’s doors. It seems like retail book stores are coming to an end. When I was going through school I was a voracious reader, sometimes tearing through as much as a book a day. I think a lot of that was due to the staff at the walden books near our house. The staff there seemed knowledgable and they consistently...

Japan update

About 9:30am this morning. We are still feeling the aftershocks here, but these are what Japan experience on a fairly normal business so it’s not impacting...

iPad 2's greatest feature: the new cover
Most of what Apple announced this morning was pretty much expected, but Apple had a little surprise for us. The seeming mundane magnetic cover. It’s got one small feature that I bet many people will love, but hardly even notice. What’s the last time you opened a book, magazine for news paper and hand to turn it on before you could read it? Yeah, stupid question, but that’s...

Apple's new laptops, Biggest upgrade in years
Wow, Apple released a major update to their laptops today. If you’ve been shopping for a new machine be glad you waited. There are a few negatives compared to their last version, but also some important new features that make expansion of your laptop much easier and faster then before. Great news if you do a lot of image or video editing. I thought this upgrade deserved a post. Probably...

Fujifilm releases awesome large sensor classic...
Fujifilm in a surprise move has released a stunningly beautiful camera in the classic sense. Only the flash betrays the fact this isn’t a 30 year old film camera from the front. It reminds me of my Olympus 35 SP which I love to carry around just because it’s such a work of art. This camera by Fujifilm is due to be released in early 2011. It features a 12.3 megapixel APS-C sensor with...

The New Olympus E5 worthy upgrade if you shoot...
Olympus officially announced the E5 last week to much wailing and complaining. It wasn’t the super camera that people had hyped it up to be. As people started to settle down they realized that Olympus has improved* pretty much every complaint they had about the E3. The E5 appears to have better high ISO by two stops. Olympus claims they have improved the low light AF as well as CAF. The...

On the right track with the Apple TV
Apple announced the Apple TV a while back and I haven’t gotten around to writing anything about it. I think they did a great job on it. At $100 it’s an easy purchase for people. Small, black and no big power brick anymore. It’s a lot more quiet than a Xbox 360 or PS3. I think they’ll sell a lot more than the old Apple TV. I don’t think that’s where the big...

Apple's new Ping network
Apple released a pile of new iPods last week, the second version of the Apple TV and a new social network called Ping. As far as a social network it’s pretty basic and that’s where it’s getting the ire of tech pundits. What is Ping? Looking at [Apple’s Ping page](http://www.apple.com/itunes/ping/) you can see that it has three main goals keeping with Apple’s style of...

clemens-and.nihongonauts.com: Exhibitions in Japan... →
So in the last days I went to two awesome exhibitions currently showing in Japan. The first one is from William Eggleston named Paris-Kyoto in the Hara Museum near Shinagawa. The show is running until the 22nd of August. I really recommend to see it, not only is the show impressive, the whole…

European Curry Bondy
I had my health check this morning and because I worked a little late I hadn’t eaten since lunch yesterday. I was starving. I had recently found the Wednesday hiding place of my favorite taco rice yatai, but they are on vacation this week and next. I walked around to find an alternative and came across Bondy which I had been wanting to try. Bondy is a few minutes of Ogawacho station, not...

iPhone antenna issues
I finally saw the antenna issue in my bedroom this weekend on my iPhone 4. I apparently touch the right spot when I use the iPhone for reading. My apartment is in a weak area anyway so I’m not really surprised. I still have enough signal to talk and since I’m on a wifi network it doesn’t impact my speed at all. It’s still the only place I’ve been able to see it happen...

Apple isn't a hardware company anymore
This was originally written as a response to a blog about Apple’s advertising and privacy although I took issue with calling Apple a hardware company. I think it probably does play a role in how Apple deals with customer privacy issues which I may cover in another post. I find this persistent belief that Apple is a hardware company interesting. In the past I believe this was true of Apple,...

Apple and Admob
It seems like technical reporting keeps getting worse and worse. The newest thing to slam Apple with is that they are preventing Admob and Google (google bought them) from collecting data from iPhone users. The press is all over the place to the point that some are claiming Apple is blocking all third party advertisers which is false. So why are they blocking Google? Looking at their agreement...

Apple vs Developers
Just to be up front, this doesn’t affect all developers, but it will affect some that write for the iPhone and iPad. What did Apple change?  Sectio 3.3.1 of the Developers License Agreement now bans all software written using another language and translated into Objective-C before being submitted to Apple.  Most developers find this new rule unfair and most users will never know about it. ...

Board gaming making the digital leap?
I’ve been a big board game fan for many years. Especially what is normally called German style board games. I won’t go into those details now, but it’s enough to say there are a lot if great games out there that are much better than monopoly or risk which you grew up with. Being a technology lover I’ve been excited when ones hits the PC but often the results have been...

Windows 7 Series Phone
I have to say Microsoft surprised me with their new mobile Windows OS. I wasn’t expecting much, but I guess this shows that Microsoft can still move if they want to. Well, it still took about 3 years from the release of the iPhone so it wasn’t fast. Microsoft came up with a whole new interface designed from the ground up for phones. It looks quite impressive. They’ve also...
